Hye-ri Lee/Chapter 4 Part 5 A1/Wed 1-2

Why Do People Work?

In the world, there are numerous workers who work hard in various fields. Then, why do those workers work? Why do teachers teach students? Why do scientists experiment? Why do firefighters extinguish a fire with a fire hose? I think that there are a number of personal reasons why the workers work. I want to suggest three main reasons for working; for externality, for self-realization and for changing the world.

First, people work for externality related with how others see them. Most of the people introduce themselves with their jobs or careers. For example, I can introduce myself as a student of Hankuk university of foreign language. Like this, a job shows someone's identity well. For this reason, many people might consider their jobs as their character or specialty which others can judge them from. So, people tend to choose and work in prominent jobs like doctor, lawyer or diplomat, which can earn much money and be regarded as honorable jobs. Those people think that others are envious of their jobs and judge them to be positive.

Second, people work for self-realization. All the people have homework that they know who they are and what kind of people they are. It is really important because work is one of ways to realize thoughts about ourselves. For instance, a person who like watching movies or is interested in making films might be a movie director in accordance with his interest. He wants to become the best director in the world. To be the best director, he works hard for making the best movie. Like this, people work in order to become who they want to be.

Lastly, someone decides to work hard for changing the world. Someone works as judge in order to make the world more fair. And someone might become architect for cutting down the number of victims by building safer building. Those people want to contribute to changing the world positively. So, they really work hard with their own proposes for better world. It is different from the second reason, in that the second one is related with more individual improvement than the last one.

People have various reasons for working. Someone works for give a good impression to others. Another realize who he or she is by working. And the others work hard to making the better world. I think workers should get pleasure from achieving our own proposes. Whatever the proposes are, if the workers can not feel happiness from their work, they are not working but labor.

  1. Hi, I'm Seonghwan Cho in the same class! First of all, I think you suggested the thesis statement very well. It include all the things that is going to be told. Also, I especially liked the opening question. It was enough to draw my attention to your writing. The examples you told in each body paragraph made your writing more specific. One thing hard to understand was the last sentence in the conclusion paragraph. you mentioned "if the workers can not feel happiness~." But, it made me confused. It seems to show that you want to say happiness is one of the purpose for working or it is the most important purpose for it. If you make it clear, your writing would be logically perfect. Overall, I enjoyed your writing. Thank you for sharing!
